Animation

I learnt 2D and 3D animation at university, but the most rewarding parts were design research and developing my skills as a concept artist.

108

This animation was inspired by Tibetan Buddhist iconography, 1960s-1970s poster and album art, and featured in the event ‘DUST’ at the National Museum of Australia (2004). I explored the intersection between traditional 2-dimensional, hand drawn, static imagery and modern 3-dimensional animation practices.

Life as a river

‘Life as a river’ featured in the St Kilda Film Festival (2006) and DUST, at the National Museum of Australia (2005). The St Kilda Film Festival description of this animation was: “…Melissa is interested in exploring animation ‘to disengage with realism and explore the painterly and organic capabilities of CGI’ – the result of which, seen here, is spectacular.”

Rose

‘Rose’ was inspired by my interpretation of Celtic art, 2-dimensional abstract imagery (e.g. Art Deco, Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts movement) and curiosity about how to combine traditional media (hand drawing and painting) and digital technologies. It featured at a showcase of student work at the National Museum of Australia (2003).

Space

‘Space’ was my first exploration of 3-dimensional computer-generated imagery, where I played with the vibrant, translucent qualities that could be achieved using digital technology.
